KIS-Fly fishing

Hi folks! It's that time of the year that there's really nothing fun to do. It's cold, there's snow everywhere and it's very, very dark... I'm getting a bad case of cabin fever here!! The good thing about this is that I have lots of time to tie flies. I've been doing lots of saltwater flies for my up and coming tuna trip and some bigger salmon flies for the start of salmon season on the 1st of June when I'm going to make a comeback to the Gaula. Even managed to tie up some trout flies for my local river. Tying flies is fun and all, but I'm really looking forward for the 1st of  March when we start up for the Pacific ocean and the search for those big tunas begins... Some new salmon tubes For Tuna and what ever is willing to bite!

I've been testing the Airflo's Rage compact shooting head for a while now and thought I'd write some thoughts about it here. As some might know the Rage is a floating shooting head designed to act like a floating skagit head. It also works with short sink tips. I tried my 510gr Rage with several rods including 12'6 #8 and 14' #7 Meiser S rods and Beulah 8/9 switch rod. I also tried several  different leader setups with it, ranging from a tapered mono leader of 18' to a fast sinking 10' polyleader. I fished and casted many different flies with it from a #6 Woolly bugger to a 6" Flash fly. I also used the same rods with other matching shooting heads to make out the differences more clearly. The other heads were: Tactical Steelhead, Compact skagit with a intermediate tip, a DDC Connect and a SGS shooting head from Meiser/Godshall. Had a lot of new gear on the water this year and there's been some that have been a bit dissapointing, but most of the new gear have been really, really good. Don't want to thrash around and mention the dissapointments, so I'll just keep things positive and do a top-5. I was unable to work out a exact order on the things I liked the most, so don't worry about the order that the gear are mentioned. If I wouldn't be so lazy I would do a top-10 as there was lots of cool stuff around this year to choose from. Vision 10'11" #8 switch rod: When I first got my hands on this rod it just instantly felt right. The handles(grips) are pretty much perfect for my taste and they suit my hands better then any other switch rod handles. The blank looks good and the overall quality is top notch. The reel seat is nice and shiny and all my reels fit in it with no problems. It does tend to loosen up a bit while fishing so be sure to check it once in a while. Action on t...

This season is almost over, so I figured this would be a good time to do some sort of recap on the whole year. It was an intresting year that gave me lots and lots of new experiences. There where ups and down, but hey, that's fishing! Costa Rica in march This wasn't a real fishing trip as my wife was with me... This was actually our honeymoon... Never the less I managed to sneak a few rods in to our luggage. We spend 7days in Zancudo and I had three days of fishing booked in advance of which two were inshore fishing and one day of offshore stuff. Well, the inshore fishing was a total bust!! I had only one shot at a Jack Crevalle and I actually managed to get the fish bite, but then I messed up setting the hook and the fish got away. It looked so dead(the inshore fishing) that we cancelled the second day. On our offshore day the weather was terrible - raining sideways with high winds and big swell. A few more words on our trip... There was a few very positive things on some new gear that we tested on the island: - Echo Ion reels. These reels were pretty nice. The drag was precise and smooth, the drag adjustment was very easy to use and very accurate and the retrieve and spool construction was right on the money. I am a bit worried about how it will take on hits from rocks and etc, but that we will found out in the future. This reel is a real champ and when you consider the price tag on it, it's amazing that they can make that good of a reel with that price. Nice job Tim(Rajeff)!! - Vision #8 Cult switch rod. Very smooth and powerful rod. It basically will throw any line that you but on it as long as it's between the weight of 28-35grams. It has an action that works it way all the way down to the cork, but most of the casting is done from the upper 2/3 of the rod. A 480gr or 510gr Airflo skagit switch lines are perfect for it.
