Turning stones and losing flies...

Hi all and greetings from the lovely Gaula river in Norway.

Had my first try at the premier on Gaula and it was an intresting week... There was the usual ups and downs of atlantic salmon fishing and the fishing was a stricktly sunk line affair.

I was personally a bit "out" because I've never really done this type of heavy duty sinking line fishing before and it was a true learning experience for me. Skagit lines and intermediates with tips we're WAY too light for the flows we fished in so it was sink2/3 to SinkYourAssOff as our go to lines.

It was a real university of early season salmon fishing and it was a delight to fish in the same team with the Professor Frode Olderkjaer - a man of 2000++ salmon on the fly. It was very inspiring to see how simple things can be when you know what your doing. He had a very down to earth and simple method of fishing and I learned a lot from him.

The total for our four man fishing team was 15 fish, but it was mainly Frode that was doing the catching with 11fish!!! Needles to say I had a lot of fish handling to do and we released most of the fish.

My friend Ilkka caught the biggest of the week with a beutiful 11,5kg cock fish - he also caught a 9kg fish.

Yours truely caught a 8kg and 10kg fish, so all in all it was an ok week of fishing.

    HI Jari,
    great post from the Gaula. We will go to fish Jouni's beats this year in the week of the 15.06. to the 22.06. Wondering what was the biggest learning in terms of cold and hight water? What would you recommend in terms of lines and fishing techniques?

    Hi Dennis,

    Sorry for my very,very late reply... I have been very busy working and earning money for my next fishing trips.

    The thing that most standed out from what I learned that week was that the more water you cover and keep your fly as close to the bottom as possible, the more bites you get. Pretty simple stuff once you get in to the "mood". I think that choosing the right line for the right spot is paramount for success. So experiment with different density lines.

    That's a very good week that your fishing in.

  BIG 10inch fly with a Nayat+flash front part. The title is the answer to about 50% of fly tying material related questions I get online. Even though Nayat has been around for a while it's only now starting to get wide spread international interest and you can get a lot more useful information on how to properly use it. I'm hoping that this small article will be among the most useful ones. So what is Nayat? From what I know it's a specific goat or sheep breed. Unfortunately I don't know anything more about it's origins.  The fur ranges from semi soft to semi coarse (overall its a pretty soft fur) and it retains water. The magic thing about Nayat however is that it sheds water substantially faster than other soft furs. Top-5 products of the year

Had a lot of new gear on the water this year and there's been some that have been a bit dissapointing, but most of the new gear have been really, really good. Don't want to thrash around and mention the dissapointments, so I'll just keep things positive and do a top-5. I was unable to work out a exact order on the things I liked the most, so don't worry about the order that the gear are mentioned. If I wouldn't be so lazy I would do a top-10 as there was lots of cool stuff around this year to choose from. Vision 10'11" #8 switch rod: When I first got my hands on this rod it just instantly felt right. The handles(grips) are pretty much perfect for my taste and they suit my hands better then any other switch rod handles. The blank looks good and the overall quality is top notch.
